Telegraphic summaries across the nation show Taft’s candidacy less popular than Roosevelt as the GOP secures victory. Hughes wins New York governorship while Joe Cannon returns to Congress with Illinois and Ohio contributing to the nationwide result.
In West Philadelphia a crowd gathered as President Roosevelt’s train stopped. He joked there is no use for the big stick anymore. When asked about election news he said they have them beaten to a frazzie.
A curious crowd of men women and children watched Judge Taft cast his ballot in Cincinnati on November 3. He presented a letter from the election board declaring his vote legal in that precinct after his previous residence had been destroyed by fire.
In New York City Republican headquarters buzzed with victory signals as Taft and Sherman campaign managers celebrated. Chairman Hitchcock asserted 325 electoral votes as Roosevelt Jr. cast his first vote for the straight Republican ticket at the event.
Nebraska appears to have gone Democratic by a decisive plurality with Bryan gaining in country precincts and cities. Lincoln swung to Bryan by about 600, overturning its usual Republican lead. Nevada is also reported leaning Democratic as Chairman Humphreys concedes Nevada to Bryan by 3000.
A telegram from New York State Chairman Woodruff at 10 tonight says New York state exceeds Roosevelt's majority, with New York City carried by 5 000 to 10 000 and Kings County by 15 000. Hughes' plurality expected around 50 000, while Taft is forecast to win the state by a large margin.
General returns show Taft carrying the national vote with a strong Republican majority in the house and a retained Senate. Indiana, Ohio, and New York City swing Taft. Nebraska and Virginia show mixed results. Bryan leads in several southern states while Minnesota and Missouri lean Republican in governor races. Taft carried Wisconsin and most doubtful states except Nebraska.
In Fairview Lincoln on November 3 Bryan announced he would have no statement to make tonight.
Early returns from California suggest Taft will lead, with analysts predicting a potential 40,000 margin if current ratios hold. Bryan backers acknowledge likely defeat as San Francisco slows due to missing voting machines while scattered precincts show Taft ahead 10,340 to 6,604 in some counties. In Missouri, Folk loses to Stone for U S senator.
Judge Taft telegrams from Cincinnati praising Frank Hitchcock for favorable nationwide returns especially New York and foretelling the result. In New York Hitchcock receives a congratulatory message from James and Sherman the Republican vice presidential candidates thanking him for campaign wisdom and success.
Otto Foelker a state senator who left a sick bed to vote for Hughes anti-racetrack betting law won election to Congress from Brooklyn district. Joseph Cannon reelected to Congress by a 10,000 vote majority in Danville 1st district.
AP dispatch from national headquarters reports early electors by state for Taft. States listed include California Connecticut Delaware Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Maine Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota New York Ohio Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Dakota Utah Vermont Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming with totals. Overall 298 votes. 242 needed to elect.
