In Butte Montana June 1 organizers from the Montana Federation of Labor and the Silver Bow Trades and Labor Council seek to form the Metal Mine Workers Union. M M Donoghue, president of the Montana Federation of Labor, announced that Samuel Gompers of the AFL has been asked to tour Butte with James Lard of the AFL Mining Department to help organize miners who have been idle for three years. Local officials of the Western Federation of Miners and allies back the effort as they push for union recognition of workers including those in the mining camps.
At 9 o'clock this morning a major Goldfield fire threatened the business district before Chief Murphy and volunteers contained it. The Grand restaurant on Main and Ramsay streets started the blaze, spreading to the A & R restaurant and the Terme saloon. Six buildings, including the Western Union office and John B. Cook Bank area, were damaged or saved with only partial losses. Insurance covered part of the roughly $25,000 in damage. Charles W. Taylor and Walter Chardh owned nearby properties, with the Cabin Bar and adjacent shop among the threatened structures.
Jack Grant, chief of police, received word from Sheriff McLown of White Pine County that a man matching Tonopah descriptions was arrested in the Copper Camp. The prisoner, accused of entering the Mint rooming house three weeks ago and stealing jewelry, including watches, would be brought back by stage tomorrow. A watch found in a jewelry store was traced to the suspect who had left town.
