A sprinkler system collapse at the Herald building in Montreal caused a 35 ton water flood that drenched the basement. Police count twenty seven missing and presumed dead as a fire swept through the stereotyping department.
A collision today near Yakima between an eastbound Northern Pacific passenger train and a five person auto killed two women and seriously injured two others. The deceased are Miss Hope Davis of North Yakima and Miss Lena Buckmaster of Maches City. Injured include Mrs. Clarence Brown and Mrs. Jennie Kincaid, with severe internal injuries and broken limbs. Chauffeur L. J. Strangeway was arrested pending coroner’s inquest.
A June cloudburst in the Abr valley of the Bfel region killed about 150 people. The worst toll was near the River Abr where two barges with Italian and Cretan railway laborers were swept away. Thirty seven bodies recovered. Lightning struck a village, destroying ten houses and injuring four. The flood subsided by morning.
Deputy Sheriff Charley Jewett, once Nome Alaska chief of police, is surprised at 7 pm when Dick Roach wounds him with a revolver in a bold street confrontation. Roach hands Jewett’s gun to an old prospector and walks away, then fires on Constable Frank Phelan, who returns fire and wounds Roach.
An error appeared in the Goldfield Knights of Pythias list of officers elect. C A Garner of Elko Lodge No 15 was named grand outer guard instead of Clark Guild of Lyon Lodge Dayton as published. Also note fresh milk and cream offerings.
A mob of about one hundred white men forced the Japanese laborers at United States Lumber Company to leave the town. After giving them time to pack, the mob escorted the workers to the station and saw them board a Seattle-bound train. Thirty Japanese were employed at the mills.
Carson June 18 Justice James Sweeney of the supreme court announced his candidacy today for United States senator on the Democratic ticket. He said he would run a tariff focused campaign and keep the effort strictly on the tariff issues.
Dr A H Elfiman reports a lively revival in the Golden Arrow mining district after a visit to Yolden Arrow, with Wawich Consolidated crossing 200 level and drifting on two faces, Captain Cotter expected back to resume Cotter Mines work, a shaft at 400 feet and over 20000 in ore in sight, and several other properties gearing up while roads remain passable for supply hauling.
An alarm at midnight summoned the department to a blaze in a dormitory occupied by Professor William Schafer when a lamp toppled in a bedroom. Bedding burned but were put out before firefighters arrived. A second alarm at 2 am from the Midway mine area cited rubbish burning in a nearby divinity room.
A Los Angeles man identified as J. Mardell is linked to a $250,000 bank robbery at the State Bank of Highland Kansas after a man swindled for $10,000 with forged drafts. In Canton Ohio a former convict shot three men inside a Louisville church during a Mojaeanist service, wounding two and killing none, then was captured.
Washington June 13 session of the conferees on the railroad bill was held at the home of Senator Elkins. Only one feature remained as a serious bar to final agreement the period of suspension of rate increases pending investigation by the Interstate Commerce Commission to determine their reasonableness.
The Ormsby County Board of County Commissioners met to request the state board of revenue allow a further loan of 15000 to support county operations for the rest of the year. This follows a February 5000 loan, now incurring 6 percent interest, with county funds at Nye and Ormsby county bank showing over 19000 excess.
Joan McLaughlin, a native of Mayo Ireland and miner, has fled with the county clerk a petition for naturalization as a citizen of the United States. He is willing to forswear allegiance to all other powers. The next citizenship hearing is in September, the fourth this year. County Clerk Pohl says about fifteen applications will be heard at the next session.
Charles Hamilton, flying from Governor's Island to Philadelphia and back, set a cross country speed record with an average of 54.96 mph on the return. His flight faced a swamp landing in New Jersey due to a broken propeller after a rapid departure from Philadelphia. Curtiss still holds the overall speed record, while Hamilton claimed cross country distance duration records.
Senator Dolliver of Iowa answered critics of the insurgents during debate on a Sundry Civil bill provision granting 25000 to gather information on the new tariff law. The provision was defeated after Clay's motion to strike it out. Dolliver and fellow progressives backed regular Republicans as the civil sundry bill totaling 118000000 was passed. He rejected charges of disloyalty and said he would not abandon the party or oppose tariff bills wholesale.
