A devastating fire at the North Butte mine leaves 35 miners dead and 123 missing amid threats to 4 415 workers. Official reports cite ongoing search efforts, hazardous conditions, and the danger posed to remaining crews while authorities coordinate rescue and containment measures.
A mine fire at the Inpegulator Mine in Butte spread smoke through lower levels after a power cable broke feeding pumps. Of 415 men on the night shift, 219 escaped. 123 miners were reported in the Speculator mine area. hundreds remain unaccounted as crews probe for survivors. Authorities fear many may be dead.
A British steamer from Liverpool to Philadelphia, in ballast, was torpedoed on June 4. Eight Americans died in the explosion, four sailors were wounded, and 40 men are missing. About 160 crew members were aboard and many survived, including Edward Rigney of New York and McCoy of Los Angeles. The submarine fired two torpedoes and a second explosion followed. The captain questioned why the attack occurred.

New Orleans reports Secretary McAdoo stating total Liberty Loan subscriptions up to now are 140 million dollars, 70 million short of the 210 million goal, with seven days left to raise 70 million more. Washington notes bank returns pace behind hopes, suggesting 100 million per day required to hit the two billion target.
Johnny Kilbane champion featherweight signs a contract to fight Leonard Telaneland in Canton Ohio. The bout is set for July 8 with both men at 159 pounds and Kilbane expected to receive a share of gate receipts and 20 percent of the take.
In Amsterdam June Associated Press reports Count Moritz Exterhazy will succeed Count Tonza as premier. Exterhazy is linked with the liberal element seen as anti German, affecting the country’s government formation and policy directions.
In Springfield Missouri authorities report the body of Lloyd Keet, 14 months, son of banker Holland Keet, was found in a well at the Crenphaw farm after an alleged kidnapping over a week. The infant’s body, wrapped in a woman’s underskirt, showed decomposition. Investigators questioned several men linked to the broader kidnapping plot as county prosecutors work to determine the crime’s full scope and parties involved.
