Frank Kawich an Indian detainee, under arrest for the murder of his squad member, confessed after a jailhouse discussion with Chief Malley and Deputy Swasey. He admitted striking the woman with a bottle during an argument while drunk, claiming self defense. The coroner’s jury had charged him pending preliminary examination.

After three hours of debate the labor side prevailed. Edward R. Zion led opposition to the tax endor sement but his amendment failed. The league approved a delegation to the national convention to vote for William J. Bryan. Mendocino’s State Senator J G Sanford was chosen Grand Sachem for the next two years.
The Democratic State Central Committee met at Native Sons Hall and chose Fresno as the site for the state convention on May 18, following the Republican gathering in Sacramento on May 14. Delegates will be apportioned by Bell vote totals from 1906, Bryan is endorsed for President, and counties are urged to organize campaign clubs on Jefferson’s birthday April 12. Brian is praised as “the greatest living statesman in the world.”

In San Francisco on February 22, Young Ketchell of Grand Rapids defeated Mike Sullivan in a 25 round bout that ended in 1 minute 18 seconds of the first round. Ketchell feinted then delivered a quick left to the jaw, flooring Sullivan who rose but was floored again by a powerful right over the heart. Referee Roche counted to ten and Ketchell was awarded the clean knockout before about 4000 spectators.
In Lima on February 22 President Pardo hosted a grand banquet for the officers of the United States fleet. The exposition hall was festively decorated with Stars and Stripes. The Peruvian president praised the white fleet, and Rear Admiral Charles Thomas spoke for the American government and people.
Associated Press reports Hearst leads Independence League at Chicago meeting forming a national party. A declaration of principles was adopted and a provisional national committee, chaired by Hearst, authorized to call a national convention to nominate President and Vice President after Republicans and Democrats hold gatherings. About 126 attendees and delegates from 35 states attended.
Denver report says Mrs Mary Nixon aged 60 her daughter Mrs Canter 25 and her 2 year old grandson were found dead in their home with sponges over mouths. Officials believe chloroform or ether caused death and dreadfully Mrs Canter suspected as ringleader. The trio had been dead for about a week.
In Montevideo on February 22, workers employed on all railways in Uruguay stopped work. The nation operates about 1400 miles of track under British capital control.
