Activity in stocks turned sharply downward with selling orders pushing prices below prior levels. Bonds weakened as the market extended the late week decline, signaling a cautious trading day in New York.
Judge Finch of the Superior Court in Willows California sentenced George Holman to twenty years at San Quentin for the murder of George Perry near Butte City last October. Both parties were colored and intoxicated at the time of the crime.
Secretary of War William H. Taft was saluted by about 15,000 people at a grand banquet in Convention Hall, hosted by the Missouri Association of Young Republicans. Taft defended the Republican party and Roosevelts era policies, with Missouri Attorney General Herbert Hadley also speaking to the crowd of 12,000 attendees.
Tommy Hurns defeated Jack Palmer in the fourth round at Wonderland Theatre London in a world heavyweight title bout. About 2000 spectators watched a one sided contest until Palmer was counted out. The fight carried a purse of 2500 and 75 percent of the gate.
In San Francisco on February 11 a Nevada miner named Peter A Minrieh used a revolver to halt a robbery at Warne Johnson's saloon on Highland Market Street. The would-be robber, armed and masked, fled as Minrieh restrained him until police arrived. The miner, a wealthy mining man from Kuroks, was unharmed.
The Senate interstate commerce committee in Washington on February 10 reported unfavorably on bills to enlarge pass privileges. It opposed Senator Stone’s newspaper publisher pass plan and Senator Cullom’s pass exchanges for large transfer companies. It favored Senator Clap’s bill allowing railroad free transport for furloughed and pensioned employees.
The Independent Labor party meeting today urged support for Theodore Roosevelt’s renomination. Delegates praised his stand against corporations, calling him the only viable candidate and urging the Republican convention to nominate him.
Donald MacKenzie, among the bank’s heaviest individual depositors, agreed to finance the suspended State Bank and Trust Company with 140000 working capital and will join its board under a reorganization plan. He withdrew the bank’s attachment and leads efforts to stabilize the Goldfield institution amid a $800000 stake across his enterprises.
In Oakland California on February 10 the coroner’s office linked the discovery of a second skeleton in the same Elmhurst excavation to a possible murder case. Workers found the remains two feet deeper than a prior skeleton in a buried sack near Gibson and Kimball avenues, amid ongoing inquiries and a broader site search.
In Reno Nevada on Pet 16.1 W. Dane ning, a local capitalist and president of Reno City Loan and Trac Company, repelled an intruder in his offices. The assailant struck with a weapon, leaving ning with a minor wound, and escaped into darkness. The burglary affected other local figures including banker W. 1. Crammling and related parties.
In Sew Lizard Ontario on February 16 a fire destroyed the home of Lawrence Hancke, a carpenter, killing seven people including his wife and six children. The blaze began early today and left the family dead.
Garbled report notes a guilty verdict in a criminal case involving a court at Crerswoot with references to the defendants W. Kir Wey Ban and D. Manor. The text is incomplete but mentions a late verdict and a jury.
In New York on February 10 a night of revelry by three women and three men ended in tragedy when a woman known as Queenie was shot on Second Avenue trolley. Mabel Couzzle confesses an accidental muff shot killed Queenie. the male companions vanished. Couzzle held for coroner’s inquest, Rose McGuire detained as a witness.
Reno Nev Feb 10 It was announced that passenger service from Salt Lake City to Ely Nevada will begin in less than a month over the new Western Pacific railroad.
Washington February 10 Secretary Root and Ambassador Jusserand signed a treaty providing for arbitration of any issue that may arise between France and America.
Washington February 10 The House naval affairs committee rejected the President's urgent bid to authorize four battleships costing 48 million dollars and unanimously urged two Delaware type battleships at 9.5 million. The panel also doubled the proposed submarine torpedo boats from four to eight.
Berlin dispatch claims Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt engaged to Count Alexander Hadik in Budapest. The Count has notified family a wedding would occur imminently. He is Imperial Council member and known at European racecourses. Mrs Vanderbilt has not commented and friends doubt the report.
William F. Walker, accused of embezzling 565000 from a New Britain tank, may win interim freedom after extradition papers arrived beyond the U S Mexico treaty period. Walker, jailed at Ensenada, said he would return to face charges but offered no statement on guilt or innocence.
In a puzzling incident W Guald, president of the United Staten Memorial Company, and a guest were involved in a prank at the Water Memorial facility. A man shoved a visitor during the event, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
In Redding California on February 10, a 16 year old boy and his mother Mrs John Martin faced a preliminary examination charged with setting fire to a hay barn on January 5. The boy testified his mother threatened him then aimed to poison Weaverville water and blow up officials in multiple cities. The barn fire marked the start of his allegations. Mrs Martin’s bond was set at 40000 dollars.
Patrick, a mine operator in Geldfield, died after a contested move involving his widow. The plea involved major entities including the Gullifrog National Bank Mining Company and the Gullifrog Light and Power Company. The widow pursued funds and attempted action while resident at Kotfield, with a claim of inherited money and a shift in ownership amid disputes.
