A huge elephant consigned to a local amusement park died en route after days in transit. With a freight bill of 1025 added to a 2000 purchase, buyers faced full rates as railroads refused to waive charges. The animal sickened during the trip and died yesterday despite nursing.
Sailor pugilist known as Gunboat Smith battles Jack Burns of Salinas to a twenty round draw in a heavyweight championship of the Pacific coast. Smith led the early rounds but Burns energized in the later stages, bringing the bout to a close with a dramatic finish.
In Managua a special session formed a five member committee to review General Bac u’s plea for sweeping war contributions and to audit Zelaya's administration. Madrid seeks a new finance system and legality checks on recent alcohol and tobacco monopoly revocations while Honduras and Costa Rica pledge confidence in Madriz. Meanwhile Estrada reports to Dr Castrillo that he will not suspend hostilities and intends to advance toward Managua despite peace talk.
Charles W. Morse, once a leading figure, faces up to fifteen years in the Atlanta federal prison after Judge Hough denied his motion for a new trial. Attorney Martin W. Littleton said a writ of error would be sought tomorrow, with further appeals possible.
Associated Press reports from London Ontario that a man closely resembling explorer Dr. Frederick A. Cook passed through the city today while en route to Detroit. In Toledo Ohio a 14 year old boy, Herman Miller, son of John Miller, hanged himself in the cellar after being sent there for not fetching water for his brother.

Chicago Dec 24 Thomas M Chivington was elected president of the American Baseball Association at the annual meeting today. He won on the first ballot by five votes succeeding Joseph D O'Brien in a tightly contested race.
G Des and 29-year-old Joseph Mackiay, 83, were captured after the murder of 18-year-old Caroline Hunt and the shooting of her parents Stephen and his wife in Toledo late last night. The suspect was seized by authorities this night.
Mexico City dispatch reports former Nicaragua president Zelaya accusing the U.S. government of systematic misinformation. He said secretary Knox misled American public opinion and denied plans to pressure exile or extradite him, asserting he remains answerable only to his government. He noted Marines’ casualties and disputes over battles involving U.S. forces in Nicaragua.
Dr Luther Gulick addressed the California Teachers association convention second general session. He said women lack team work and cooperative organization but can learn to combine for ambition. George Vincent spoke on the New Duty of School. Luther Burbank was unable to attend due to illness. The meeting supported uniting educational organizations in the state council and announced Alexis F Lange elected president.

Los Angeles on December 29 MH E Muntingtor principal owner of the Pacific Electric railway Los Angeles Railway and Redondo and Los Angeles Railway announced a voluntary wage rise averaging 2 to 5 cents per hour. The hike takes effect January 1 and affects about 2300 workers.
Faris December 29 The chamber of deputies approved the tariff bill by 265 to 42 after a lengthy debate. The measure, high protectionist in aim, authorizes a tariff commission and schedules enforcement for March 31, 191n though adoption may slip later. Chairman Clote said the bill protects French interests and targets no foreign country.
Montreal reports a severe typhoid outbreak with an estimated one in five residents affected. Thirty new cases and two deaths were logged today, raising monthly totals to 43. overall city estimates range from 2 100 to 4 500 cases, linked to the city water supply.
News from Sonora reports a four day old battle between Mexican Rurales and bandits near Altar. Four bandits including the leader were killed and two captured. No Rurales were hurt. Many head of cattle were recovered.
Gifford Pinchot receives unexpected support from Sir Horace Plunkett at the Economic History Association in Dublin. Plunkett called Pinchot a remarkable public servant, urged better heed of J J Hill’s warnings, and warned of rising food import costs unless farming methods improve. He accused farmers of land speculation rather than genuine farming.
Five workman passengers and the motorman and conductor of a trolley car on the New York and Long Island Traction company were imprisoned for nearly 24 hours in a snow drift on Long Island during a storm. They were without food from early evening until late the next day, rescued by police, and sent home. Power remained on and heaters kept the cars warm.
Louisville December 29. The Southern Pacific company filed an amendment to its charter here today. It certified that of the 74,000,000 dollars of preferred stock authorized to be issued, 744,518 shares of par value 100 dollars each have been converted into a similar form.
Mrs Carrie Nation has appealed a $100 fine for smashing the bar at Union Square to the district court of appeals. Her attorney raises constitutional questions, chiefly that prosecution should have been in the name of the United States or District of Columbia rather than the local agency. Additionally, a separate note mentions a man named Klumm jailed for wife beating and a goofy courthouse park scene with old ball and chain props.
Gov. W. McNear a founder of the San Francisco Merchants Exchange and a pioneer of California, died in Oakland at age 72 after a prolonged spinal illness. He led a San Francisco firm and was involved in Port Costa ventures and several flour milling companies statewide.
