Senator Newlands urges Secretary of War Taft to hold the order for return of troops until an alternative protection is provided. The appeal stresses delaying withdrawal to ensure ongoing security measures and prevent gaps in defense.
Senator Newlands of Nevada seeks to suspend the government troop withdrawal from Goldfield until alternative protection is arranged. He asks Secretary Taft to delay the order next Monday so he can consult Governor Sparks and push Nevada to convene the legislature. Tate and Root advise on the matter. a White House contact is anticipated.
The Tonopah Mining Company of Philadelphia announces a dividend on its $1 par stock but defers payment until debt of 578,240 is cleared. Net earnings for the quarter ending November 30 reached 301,520, while quarterly dividends had been 26 cents per share.
From Guthrie Oklahoma a telegraph says a Negro massing four miles from Henrietta may attack at any moment. National Guards are held in readiness to march, armed guards patrol Henrietta streets, couriers seek the armed group within reach and within four miles of town.
In a movement led by the Socialist party, about 40,000 families on New York's lower East Side prepare to refuse rent, aiming for a 20 percent reduction. Pauline Newman organizes a 400 women canvass to obtain pledges against paying full rent if demands are unmet, with threats of wholesale evictions and continued protests.
Governor Broward appointed William James Bryan of Jacksonville as United States Senator to fill the remainder of the term ending March 4, 1909. Bryan, a prominent attorney and county solicitor, was born October 10, 1876 in Orange County and educated at Emery College and Washington and Lee University before practicing law in Jacksonville. He announced his candidacy for the seat two months ago.
George Wingfield says no change in the situation and expects troops to leave Monday. He advocates continuing to operate the mines with non-union labor and warns against interference with Western Federation. The mines will run at full capacity, and other properties will open when ready. EXPLOSION KILLS THREE, ROSEBURG Ore Dec 27. Three men killed by a gasoline launch explosion on the Umpqua River owned by Warren Reed.
Boise Idaho December 27. The Pettibone trial nears completion as defense depositions are read to support a gas leak theory for the Fred Bradley home explosion in San Francisco. One witness examination remains.
Jack Wilson of Raymond Washington was deserted on Christmas Eve by his new wife Marie Parsons Raymond aged 18 who fled with 712 dollars. They had married Monday night after meeting in Raymond and planned a trip to Oklahoma. Wilson and police seek Marie and the unidentified man she spoke with at Portland’s central station. No trace of the couple or funds remains.
Hearing of the complaint by the California Commercial Association was held before Interstate Commerce Commissioner Franklin K. Lane. The association accuses Wells Fargo Express Company of concealing their tariff schedule from the public. Briefs are due in fifteen days as Commissioner Lane travels to Washington soon due to his wife’s serious illness.
In Durango Colorado on December 27 Chas BE McConnell president of the Smelter City Bank, which closed December 17, was arrested on a warrant by Harry Jackson who had $3400 on deposit when the bank shut. The examining committee reported that on December 12 McConnell borrowed $10,000 in cash from the First National Bank of Durango, pledging securities from his own bank, yet the Smelter City Bank records show no deposit of the funds.
New York reports that the dual weekly review of trade will note bank clearings for the short week show a heavy drop from the prior week. The total bank exchange declines 27.26 percent for five days compared with the same week last year.
Bradstreets notes a perceptible slackening of trade and eased financial conditions. Collections are generally slow but favorable signals include several cities moving to practical currency bases and the end of special holidays in California. US weekly failures total 246, down from 300. Canada reports 50 failures, up from 40.
In Fairmont West Virginia on December 27 Associated Press reports two more bodies pulled from the Monogah mines, bringing the total recovered to 241. The death toll is expected to reach about 400, with many bodies unlikely to be recovered.
Frank Golden, president of Nye and Ormsby County Bank, announced the banks will open January 2 regardless of other banks and in better condition than ever. T B Rickey of State Bank and Trust said they would open fifteen minutes after depositors sign the agreement, noting the need for all signatures before opening. He emphasized only lawful actions and the dependence on depositor signatures, with death as a possible excuse for missing signatures.
Salt Lake, Utah December 27. A report to Governor Cutter says Colorado Ute Indians travel in bands in Southern Utah raiding cattle. A small band attacked three cowboys near Verdure in San Juan County on December 23 forced them to drive cattle back into a canyon under threat of death. Cowboys and cattle are confined in the canyon. The Governor has notified Washington authorities.
Prices of stocks had a comprehensive rally today with expanded volume as speculative favorites led the push. Bears covered positions amid easing currency premiums and subsiding demand, while bonds stayed steady and the market sentiment showed cautious improvement.
Spokane dispatch reports Steve Adams, previously tried for Fred Tyler murder and discharged, was immediately re arrested by Sheriff Fitspatrick of Telluride Colorado for the 1904 murder of Arthur Collins. He will be transported to Colorado promptly.

Indicted banker Walter J. Bartnett testified for four hours before a San Francisco Grand Jury on the mislay securities of the California Safe Deposit and Trust Company. He volunteered to appear, and his wife also testified but denied knowledge of the bank's affairs. No indictments were issued.
In Denver on December 27 Judge R B Leads sentenced mining men and others convicted of using the mails to defraud in the Spanish Bullion Company stock scheme. George Dubers Lee Dubers and C L Blackwell received 30 days in jail and 1000 dollar fines. Whitlam Wilson W B Cameron A B Keables and Arthur Lawrence got 15 days imprisonment and 500 dollar fines each. Arthur Levan and B W Sebben paid 100 dollar fines plus costs. R C Hunt and Panton Pinkus were assessed 60 days’ fines and 150 dollars costs.
In Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania the Darr mine explosion on December 19 led to the recovery of about seventy bodies within twenty four hours as rescue teams pressed to reach remaining victims. Local officials say the toll may rise.
Utah mine towns faced closure as Silver King Consolidated and allied firms at Park City halt operations. About a thousand workers affected as the directory cites wartime disruptions and price controls for metal and fuel.
