Eight passengers were killed and 25 injured when the Scotch express derailed near Hawes Junction while heading home for Christmas. The collision with a pilot engine caused a blazing wreck. most bodies were burned beyond recognition.
Roy MacDonald returned from Park City with a wife, revealing he married Miss Adrienne Townsend in Detroit on June 29, 1910. The union was kept secret, the bride’s students unaware, and Mrs. MacDonald planned to resign teaching to relocate to Tonopah with her husband.
Two passenger trains collided head on near Nevada Ohio on December 4 amid poor signaling. Six people were killed and about six injured. Engineer Miller, a student, was among the dead.
In Washington Pennsylvania a coal mine abandoned fifty years ago collapsed today, pulling a large foundry into the shaft. John A. Stan vice president of the company and twelve workers were seriously injured, with none fatally hurt. About twenty others escaped with minor injuries or near misses.

They wore masks, were identified, and bound over to the grand jury. The four players may face indictments for gambling violations. The suspects will be brought to the county jail from Rhyolite.
The New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco exchanges closed yesterday and remain shut today and Monday. Additional closures are planned for the upcoming Saturday and Monday as holidays affect trading. The Daily Bonanza reports the market halt.

Chicago December 24 The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and railroad managers announced no strike west north or south of Chicago after a midday conference. Grand Chief Stone led negotiations with mediator Charles Neill. The agreement grants a general raise of 1 8 percent, equaling about 40 cents a day in normal service.
The Mizpah hotel lobby has been festively decorated by Chief Clerk Arthur M. Perry with wreaths and holly garlands. Wreaths adorn windows while garlands drape between chandeliers to create a homelike, inviting atmosphere for traveling guests during the holidays.

The Stock Yards fire in Chicago continues to burn near the Morris warehouse. Twenty four people are reported dead as flames shoot upward and water streams struggle to subdue the blaze. Aerial smoke clouds rise while crews pour on water to halt the spread.
In Fresno California a mob of eighty Industrial Workers of the World swarmed the county jail. A steam fire engine doused speakers dampening a twenty minute demonstration. Prisoners later faced bread and water after clashes with officers and jeering crowds.
About 600 children will wake early to discover Santa Claus gifts. Santa finishes Tonopah duties tonight and tomorrow at noon will greet the younger set at the Elks building. All Tonopah children urged to attend with parents if needed. The Christmas tree lies in the vacant store under the Elks building beside the Nevada California Power office.
Valencia Der 24 The Spin steamer Industria and the French steamer Jeanne Consell were sunk in a collision off the coast of Algiers. All but one aboard the French vessel were saved. Industria was towed to port but sank later.
Ohio December 24 six people including four men and two women were found dead in two rooms of a building behind the opera house. Officials suspect gas stove fumes caused the fatalities as occupants were found either dressed or in bed, apparently asleep.
The San Francisco stock exchange adjourned yesterday afternoon until Tuesday morning for holidays. Consequently no stock quotations were received today by broker Harry B. Epatine.
Prisoners stacked mattresses against cell bars to create a wall that blocked a stream from a fire engine. The sheriff summoned the fire crew and directed a full-press surge, yet the mattresses and inmates withstood the force. Defiantly they pressed toward the windows but were driven back by the heavy stream.
