A third catastrophe unfolds in western Pennsylvania bituminous coal fields this month as a church festival provides a beacon of hope to prevent further loss of life. Rescue teams coordinate efforts amid dangerous conditions, while families gather for updates on trapped miners and injured workers.
At the Pittsburg Coal Company Dare mine in Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania an explosion trapped between 200 and 260 workers. Rescue teams found 13 bodies already with horrific injuries and feared many more perished. The disaster marks a third mine tragedy this month in the region with up to 600 dead. One worker Joseph Mapleton survived and aided rescuers after minor injuries.
Indictments returned by the Grand Jury charge J Dale Brown and Walter J Bartnett with embezzlement counts. Brown linked to securities embezzlement for Ellen M Colton estate valued at 205000. Bartnett named as administrator and bailee. Bail set at 100000 each.
Manila December 19 The first bill of the Philippine assembly appropriates $1,000 for the construction of schools throughout the provinces. The bill passed unanimously. The assembly, without dissent, instructed the delegates heading to Washington. Tractions are largely directed against tariff laws and coastwise shipping rules.
A Mexican police action near Ensenada detained William F. Walker alias Morrison, a New Britain bank cashier wanted for theft. He admitted the alias and confessed $20,000 in cash and about $325,000 in securities were taken. He attempted suicide with a revolver but was restrained and confined in a private jail cell.
New Britain Connecticut reports the arrest of William G. Waller, the cashier of the Savings Bank of New Britain, for theft exceeding half a million dollars. Authorities in Lower California say he will be extradited for trial, with bank officials hopeful of recovering many negotiated securities.
Oakland December 19 Charles H C Jackson a wealthy Downieville mine owner who vanished three weeks ago has reappeared in San Francisco registering at the Hamlin and ending the search by friends who feared foul play. He had last been seen in Sacramento where a hotel change triggered the mystery.
Chicago December 19 The Illinois Central annual meeting to decide control between B H Harriman and Stuyvesant Fish was adjourned today to a February date to be set. In St Petersburg December 19 M Filossofoff minister of commerce and ex comptroller died suddenly at the Marle theater during a gala performance. cause given as apoplexy.
In Washington on December 19, after the House adjourned John Sharp Williams of Mississippi and David De Armond of Missouri fought on the chamber floor. Several blows were exchanged as colleagues separated them, Williams’ face bleeding, amid long standing enmity between the two lawmakers. The row arose from tensions over remarks about a local newspaper and a defense of seed appropriation issues.
In Goldfield on December 19, 1907, miner leaders urged a conference with mine owners to resolve disputes with the Western Federation of Miners. The mine owners rejected any new conference, stating their irrevocable position. Attorney O N Hilton vowed to press for arbitration and to seek removal of agitators, while officials noted the commission could urge talks but not decide the dispute. General Funston and U S commissioners continued work elsewhere.
The State presented damaging testimony in the George Porthbone murder case involving former Governor Brownenberg. Charles Neville, 17, the son of John Neville, testified he was instructed to kill him because he “knew too much.” Ida Toney, Harry Orchard’s second wife, is to testify tomorrow as the State plans to press its case. Orchard dominated most of the day’s proceedings, though re direct brought few new points.
A massive blast at a military powder magazine in Palermo tonight caused a series of explosions that shook the town. Officials report about twenty five killed and a hundred injured as fires and debris spread through ruined houses and panic swept the area.

New York December 14 John Ahearn Democrat was elected to the Manhattan board of aldermen after being relieved as borough president by Governor Hughes ten days earlier. He won 24 votes to 12 for Republican Max Grifenhagen. Ahearn’s removal followed an investigation prompted by two Civic Club officers.
The Chicago Tribune reports an underground movement to nominate Attorney General Bonaparte for the presidency. The idea appears as a Republican probe, with Bonaparte known for independence yet previously affiliated with the Democrats, hindering serious GOP consideration. Alaska steamer Alaskan runs aground at Shelter Point as rescue efforts begin.
