A heavily armed steamship of about 4000 tons and 350 feet long, with torpedo tubes and two masts, was sighted roughly 500 miles north of the Azores on December 4. The wireless warning urged merchant vessels to take precautions as the vessel lay off Sanity Hook and remained a potential threat to Allied shipping.
The commercial submarine Deutschland arrived off the Weser mouth signaling the completion of its second round trip to the United States. It completed the westward and eastward legs in 16 to 23 days, carrying dye and chemical cargo valued at about 2 million dollars and carrying official mail for Germany. Officials in New London and at the Willehad interned liner's dock voiced cautious optimism about future trips.
Berlin dispatch notes Rumanians have suffered about 112000 prisoners since entering the war plus roughly 300000 casualties. Washington December 11 The supreme court is expected to act favorably on a motion to assign an early hearing for the Adamson act with a final decision before January 1 when the act becomes effective. Arguments will be heard January 8 in the last opinion day before recess.
In San Diego at a city park crossing three visiting women from Los Angeles were killed and two others injured when a motor car collided with a streetcar. The dead are Mink Mitty Nicholson aged 77 Mrs Marguerite Hale aged 65 and Eva Stills, Hale’s daughter. The injured include Kriteh, driver of the auto, and A P McAirwhan.
A letter from Mrs. Barnett Dannie of Chihuahua City describes Villa demanding and obtaining 1,000,000 pesos in silver from residents during the occupation. The message claims that everything owned by Americans in Mexico was taken.
London December 11 Associated Press reports Premier Lloyd George is confined indoors with a severe chill and cannot attend the king's sealing of office ceremony. He sent a message to the House expressing his hope to speak today but remains unable. Bonar Law will seek adjournment until Thursday while the war effort remains the government's main priority.
Washington December 11 The president signed an executive order restoring citizenship to Louis J. Smith. The action elevates him to full citizen status, applying to residents in associated areas.
A Athens telegram reports a Greek Cygaldews revolt in the Aegean with all Agia communities renouncing allegiance to Constantine. Entente control over Greece may be restored by demolishing the army and reestablishing post telegraphs railways and releases of imprisoned leaders. Allied nationals continue to depart Athens as conditions ease.
