Nine companies of soldiers march into Goldfield as tents rise in the southern city. Rumor spreads that the War Department may order additional forces to reinforce the camp.
Special to the Bonanza Reno Dec 6 reports units of the Twenty second United States Infantry from Fort McDowell and the Presidio leaving Oakland and Sacramento with about 500 men and officers. Colonel Alfred Reynolds commands with Major Jacob P Kreps and Lieutenants Ripley Whitfield and Pearce. General Funston not with the detachment but expected later as Washington orders a strong force to preserve order.
The first section of the troop train arrived at 3 40 P M in Sacramento and left for the east. The second section arrived and will depart for Runover Hill at 7 P M after a delay near Sacramento due to a prior train accident. The specials have priority over the Southern Pacific line.
Goldfield remains unusually quiet as Miners fear looming trouble. Mine operators plan to run without interference and may establish a military post after troops arrive. George Wingfield returns, but locals doubt martial law will occur despite past unrest and rival strikes.
Secretary William Erb of the Mine Owners association of Goldfield visited yesterday on his way to Manhattan and back to the scene of trouble. He was asked about the situation and declined to give a full statement.
General Funston reports meeting a mining operator in Goldfield who estimates 8200 Western Federation miners there with 1000 armed. few are dangerous. He warns mines could be blown and people harmed before troops arrive. Governor Sparks heads to Reno to meet federal troops en route to Goldfield.
The president authorizes all necessary transportation and directs prompt action. Funston reports ordering nine companies from San Francisco and Monterey to start this morning for Goldfield.
At Monongah West Virginia a massive explosion trapped about 493 workers in two Consolidated Coal mines Nos 6 and 8. Three men survived to report the event while many others are believed killed by cave in and toxic gases. The accident involved 500 workers at the start of the shifts with ventilation interrupted.
New York December 6 R G Dun and Co weekly review notes improved financial conditions aiding a return to normalcy while noting industrial id macchinery at mills and factories. Retail trade holds up and holiday demand rises with prompt collections. Bradstreet’s forecast highlights easier call money and better banking though two large interior banks suspended. Business failures for the week ending December 3 total 272, up from 268 last week.
The jury to try George A. Pettibone for complicity in the murder of former Governor Stuenenbergs was completed and sworn in Boise Idaho this afternoon. Evidence is to begin Monday.
In Carson the land jury returned five indictments against two prominent Nevadans for unlawful government land appropriation in Nevada. Indictments named J Warren Williams, his brother George B Williams, and another unnamed party in Churchill county.
A Hop Sing man Chung You faced Yong Fong in court when Yong Fong was shot and killed by Fong On at Webster and California streets. Fong On claimed Wong Fong owed him $900 and denied intent to kill. defense attorney Oxgod Putman helped prevent escape.
At 11 tonight 380 workers were in the Monongah mines when an explosion trapped most inside. Four were confirmed dead, five escaped to the surface with serious injuries, and the rest are believed dead as entry to the real workings remains unopened. Coffins were ordered to be shipped to Monongah.
Police officer Patrick Lyon was shot during an attempted arrest. Men identified as the slayers Menki alias Harry Glitchell Rolla Robe were held to answer to murder without bail. A crowd gathered at the city jail as the decision was announced.
Police say a price of 800 dollars was placed on the head of the witnesses man Chale Yon. He is on bail awaiting trial for perjury. Authorities fear continued clashes between rival tongs.
