John Maloff, a Los Angeles grocer, and three others were arrested today in connection with a freight car theft. About ninety bags of sugar were found hidden near Maloff’s store as investigators probed the incident.

Edith Colby, a sister, was found guilty of second degree murder in Thompson Falls Montana for the death of A C Thomas a prominent politician. The verdict came after the alleged insult incident.
Chattanooga mayor orders a carload of potatoes from Idelo at 1.50 per hundred pounds for divinization at east from the city market house as an experiment. Potatoes bought through the mayor's office will be sold for 25 percent less than current retailer prices. In Richmond Virginia an absolute boycott on eggs and turkeys for the week is declared by the executive committee of the Housewives League.
Foxhall P Keene a noted New York sportsman was knocked unconscious during the annual joint hunt meeting at Harford Hunt Club near Farmington Maryland. He suffered a concussion and remained semiconscious at the club as doctors reported no broken bones. His horse reportedly fell at a fence and Keene was found by hunters unconscious in a bushes clump. The condition was deemed too serious for transfer from the club home.
London dispatch reports A. Bonar Law declined the king's invitation to form a cabinet and the king may call Lloyd George to form a government. A general election is debated but war needs may delay it. Asquith resigns, Law summoned, coalition likely, rapid war management planned. Other items cover Chicago storage warehouses probe into food price rises and a possible ownership question over 72 million eggs.
The colonial government today confirmed reports of German submarines in the Atlantic led to halting troop dispatch planned for November. Coast lights are dimmed and a patrol-boat fleet is organized to warn of any hostile vessel approaching.

A Spanish steamer Plo X sailing from New Orleans to Barcelona was sunk in a storm 200 miles off the Canary Islands with the drownings of about one hundred crew members. Twenty two were saved. The Buenos Aires was nearby but could offer little aid due to heavy seas.
