Nearly twenty workers testified in Pittsburg at a federal probe into alleged peonage at the Pressed Steel Car plant where 3500 workers are on strike. Witnesses requested sheriff protection to avoid returning to the plant as the public hearing closed with further investigations to be held behind closed doors.
Grace Snell Coffin Walker Coffin Layman Love, daughter of Amos Snell of Chicago, reportedly marries Hugh Low, a newspaper man, in Santa Ana after a divorce a year earlier.
A destructive blaze at Hoquiam Washington August 28 morning wiped out the Northwest ern Lumber company barn and the Hoquiam Lumber and Shingle company offices a grocery and a millinery shop and other structures. The loss is estimated at 75000 dollars.
Berlin reports a string of motor and propeller accidents and strong headwinds thwarted Counts Zeppelin and his airship from visiting Berlin as planned. In Sacramento an urgent river meeting raised 100000 to open a homely shaped valley neck for flood egress. Captain Anderson started with 5000, P J Van Lobenfelz added 5000, and many others pledged with 1 annual assessment. Nine trustees were elected for three years and options secured on lands to straighten and widen the river’s lower end.
Esmeralda County grand jury returned two indictments against Patrick Casey for murder and assault to kill. Casey faced the panel, expressed no objections, and Attorney Jack Diskin was appointed to defend him. A second pair of indictments names Vortees for a badger game, with another charging document placed on the secret file awaiting arrest.
George F. Turritin died in Reno on Thursday evening after a brief illness from pneumonia. A Nevada resident since 1869 he served as United States surveyor general and helped found Reno as a stable business center. He was mayor of Reno and treasurer of the Elks lodge and a prominent Masonic member.
