Two trains from Ballarat and Bendigo collided at Braybrook Junction eight miles from Melbourne. Forty persons were killed and sixty injured as the Bendigo train rammed the Ballarat train. Five cars wrecked and fire consumed most of the wreckage with many bodies unrecognizable.
A long day of sailor merrymaking by the American battleship fleet ended with two grand banquets. The redmain and petty officers banquet at Hotel Alexandria featured a formal welcome to Los Angeles by Mayor Harper and included Governor Gillett. Rear Admiral Charles Thomas spoke along with other notable citizens.
Two suits asking damages totaling 1 163 271 dollars were filed in Los Angeles Superior Court against the California Development Company. The InterCalifornia Railroad Company and Southern Pacific Railroad allege the development project altering the Colorado River course to aid Imperial Valley caused the losses.
Conductor W H Catill of the Las Vegas and Tonopah railroad was accidentally killed while transferring a life from a car to a baggage truck. Mrs James Wright of this city shot and killed Leila Gordon a negro woman with a single barreled shotgun. She reloaded and pursued Mary Davis another woman. A desperate struggle followed during which Mrs John Wright was badly beaten. The quarrel arose over white children not playing with nearby negro children.
Santa Cruz April 20 The hearing in the Walter J. Bartnett perjury indictment connected with the Colton estate led Judge Smith to reduce bond to 5000 dollars. Arraignment set for May 11. He furnished bonds.
New York April 20 A mining magnate John A Drake failed to locate old hunting coat containing mine stock certificates. His Montana mine valued at about 2 million dollars was ready for sale to Amalgamated Copper officials. A missing certificate halted the deal and Drake, spending 6000 monthly on development, could not complete the sale. The mine shows a five foot ledge 1000 feet long with ore yielding 59 a ton.
Los Angeles report states Regiah Hawkins has been hospitalized for seventy five days with uncertain prognosis. Doctors say there is no immediate expectation of recovery to normal condition and the case remains under medical care at the hospital.
Seattle April 20 Abe Attell retained the featherweight championship of America by defeating Ed Kelly of Buffalo in the eighth round at South Bend Indiana. Kelly failed to land a solid punch while Attell demonstrated superior footwork and cleverness.

Reno April 30 Clayton Belknap long prominent Nevada Democrat and former superintendent of the Hale and Norcross mine at Virginia City died at his home after a brief illness. He remained active in state politics and supported the movement for a separate political organization despite changing silver sentiment.

Jedee Brown reports that at 10 o'clock this morning Judge pronounced George Dove guilty of murder in the first degree. Dove received a life sentence to Nevada Penitentiary with a later formal sentencing to follow for six other prisoners in Carson City. Dove showed little concern during the proceedings and made a quip about a long rent on the way back to jail.
