In Bisbee and Warren, federal commission discussions and arrests unfold as authorities scrutinize alien enemies and possible deportations. The talks include local sheriffs, miners and business leaders amid warnings of a looming strike and national security concerns.
In Douglas on November 2 the mayor ordered police to stop a Joel theatre from screening a film about Reconstruction after reports that the nearby Twenty fourth Infantry troops warned they would riot to protect their reputation if the picture aired. Police cited threats from the battalion as basis to halt the exhibit. No further attempts will be made to present the film locally.
Arizona reports an official final subscription of 7 742 750 dollars to the Second Liberty Loan. The total supports the national effort against Prussian militarism and autocracy and weakens Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Readers recount the funeral of Frank N. Wolcott in Tombstone and note that Harry G. B. Cook and fellow Bisbee residents attended. The letter defends omission of Cook’s name from a published list, stating many pioneers came and a complete roster was impractical.
In Nogales and Tucson reports, two masked men robbed a service auto five miles from the city on the Mission road after eight o’clock. The driver and a companion were stabbed. one woman and a man wore veils and hats. Bloodhounds trailed suspects then lost them. robbers mounted horses and escaped toward Bills. Authorities道 seek clues as deputies pursue a trail.
Phoenix on November 3, John Fields a two month newlywed accused of shooting his wife after she blamed him for infidelity. He confessed to officers who arrested him two and a half miles east of Skull Valley after a two hour search. Fields carried a .32 caliber automatic and offered no resistance when confronted by constable Haze Burch.
Governor Esteban Canta of Lower California visited Yuma with staff and a military band to observe a fair arrest in progress. He was greeted at the border by Governor Campbell of Arizona and, with the two, reviewed a parade in which United States infantry trained nearby.
In Pima County Superior Court Judge 3 L. Pattee ruled in favor of Hares C. Wheat or cerif, awarding back salary from January 1, 1915, to March 15, 1917, as new legislation took effect. Judge McAlister previously in Graham County had noted Sheriff salary cases looked favorable. County Attorney J F Ross for back salary case then took under advisement.
Information received yesterday from Agua Prieta across the line via P Elias Calles governor and military commander of Sonora reports that about 800 Indians were driven from Tesamaya last Wednesday. The Yaquis retreated with dead and wounded into the mountains as 19 Mexican soldiers were killed and four wounded. Calles says troops will surround the Indians to starve them into surrender.
In Tucson on November 3 the university assembly heard Hon. William Jennings Bryan Sr. discuss the relation of the people to the government. After his talk President von KleinSmid introduced him and the student body handed the meeting back. Mrs Bryan declined to address the gathering saying the Bryan family had said plenty for one morning.
Reports say TK Brandt cashier of the Phat National branch in Tombstone was wounded yesterday by Fred Koel during a robbery attempt. He was operated on in Bishee and is recovering, with the bullet lodged in back muscles but spinal cord intact and no intestinal injury.
The Tucson Star reports John Williams and the Macia brothers found an old gold vein in the Mammoth mine near Cass Grande with a promising $20 gold vein. The vein may extend a thousand feet, though the Macia brothers and Wil Hans doubt the extent. Ore is free milling and a mill is planned to handle tonnage as shipments are limited by distance. Williams lowered to a 15 foot fault, yielding 20 inches of ore, and activity continues around the Cass Grande district.
