In Tucson, all switching crews on the Southern Pacific refuse to work after a 9 engine without footboards is used. Three men are laid off, extra conductors perform yard tasks, and about twenty switchmen are involved. The dispute centers on perceived dangerous footing on the engine. The situation may widen into a grave rail conflict.
The Methodist Episcopal Church will preach tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 7:80 p.m. Epworth League meets at 7:15 p.m. Prayer meeting Wednesday at 8 p.m. Catholic Church offers Masses at 8 and 9:30 and services at 7:90 p.m. Sunday school at 10 a.m. Congregational Church extends an invitation for Sunday May 19 with morning and evening preaching by the pastor. Christian Science services are held opposite Schiefelin Hall on Fremont St at 11 a.m. Sunday school at 10 a.m. Wednesday evening services at 8. All are invited.
The post office ad for the week lists remaining letters including Burgeton, Carey, Clark, Entange, Halton, Gilroy, Joting, Ochoa, Williams, Margarita, Mermana, and Williams, with a note to call for above letters by date of advertisement.
A remedy for sore nipples is Chamberlain's Salve to ease distress after nursing. Apply immediately after feeding, wipe away with a cloth before the baby nurses again. The article notes nurses commonly use this salve with good results and it is sold by druggists.
The Williams brothers of Cochise county and their party travel from Yuma by three wagons and eight mules to inspect Bryson Cowell and Deepain properties in the north. They plan further southern travel to the Gulf of California then Tivaron islands after selling the Monte Cristo mine and Seattle franchises. They are described as multi millionaire.
The University of Southern California team arrived in Tucson from Los Angeles and will debate tonight at 8:90 oclock in the Tucson Opera House. The program features the University Orchestra and Bendemeer's Stream Glee Club. The debate topic asks if U S Senators should be elected by direct vote of the people with Oliver Clark as affirmative first speaker.
District court docket items show Sullivan quiet title cases argued and submitted. Juan Herrera case heard with youth placed on probation under city marshal supervision. Azeinet James Carpens continued. Perrin vs Landers and Overiock vs Gary in judgment for plaintiff. Territory vs Antonis Labrado demurrer to indictment retained. Defendant ordered discharged, "good and sub-".
Gusymas dispatch reports the steamer Maori King docking with 1 200 Chinese and Russians bound to work on Southern Pacific extensions. Mexico refuses landing due to 21 armed American guards aboard. War department silent, but expected days for laborers to land. Earlier AP notes 20 Chinese killed in Pacific riot. A new rule aims to stiffen enforcement at the Arizona border with six mounted inspectors to be added under Captain George Webb. He recommends increasing the force, designating Lochiel Buenos Ayres and Quito quits as ports of entry near Nogales, as immigration laws take effect July 1 with higher head taxes for special nationalities.
The remains of AC Roland, who died yesterday at the Pittsburg Arizona mines near Charleston, were brought to Tombstone for burial. The funeral was held this afternoon from the B Tarbell undertaking parlors under the auspices of the F A M, of which he was an honored member. Solemn services and interment followed, with many friends and relatives in attendance.
Judge Nave will not try four new riot defendants from Gila county’s March grand jury. The case involves an alleged attempt to lynch William Baldwin, a condemned man sentenced to death for the murder of Mrs. Harvey Morris and child near Roosevelt. Judge Campbell from Tucsoo will preside in Globe on May 27 for the defendants Huthrie Houston Teme and Bayless, due to Judge Nave’s earlier involvement in quelling the riot and the attempted lynching.
