Campbell Signs Senate Bill For University Financing
Phoenix March 16. The special session closed with governor approval of Senate Bill 40 providing funds for the University of Arizona for the current year. The measure authorizes the state auditor to draw warrants on the general fund for up to 50 percent of uncollected university taxes, to be recouped later by mill tax collections. The governor vetoed a concurrent resolution achieving the same end, but an attorney general opinion supported the bill’s effect. The general fund is low but expected to be replenished as needed. The House adjourned to Monday. the Senate stayed to 2:20 pm. Republicans pressed for immediate action on session bills. Two Senate bills passed involve constitutional amendments on legislative power over initiatives and on eligibility for offices created or expanded during a term. One measure aimed to address the embarrassment around Fred T. Colter’s gubernatorial candidacy. The governor also approved a Senate resolution urging Tucson as a hospital site for the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and a Senate joint memorial to rescind an order restricting admission of workers to the San Carlos reservation before July 15.
