Old Timers Relate Incidents Of Early Days In Bisbee
In Douglas on June 15 old timer H. C. Stillman recalled early Bisbee mining days. The first arrivals to work on the Copper Queen property landed in Tombstone Canyon on June 14, 1880. Salient figures Sullman, Martin, Ballard, Lewis W. Williams and Jack Evers arrived by train to Tucson then by stage to Bisbee. Rival recollections by Red Tom Whitehead, former Prescott resident since 1866, described hotel dining for miners and gamblers, along with a daring furniture-store break-in to supply a morning breakfast. Both speakers drew a crowd of tenderfeet at the Gadeden Hotel.
