Soviets Shift Gold Reserves to Silver Amid Market Fear
New York June 63 According to cable advices the Soviet government plans to convert its gold reserves, about 250 million dollars, into silver. World silver output is estimated at 100 to 122 million ounces this year. The Pittman order could absorb all U.S. silver production, leaving about 77 million ounces with over 20 million already sent to India and China. The move could trigger a stampede in global silver markets, while U.S. silver purchases and imports shift under treaty terms and demand from jewelry and motion picture sectors rises. A shipment of 198,000 in gold bars from India arrived in New York this week.
