The Big Cotton Swindle by Furlong and Early
In January 1884 Captain Warner assigns me to Sherman Texas to trace missing cotton shipments diverted in transit. I uncover a four-man swindle in which bills of lading were forged, confederates cashed face values, and the gang moved money via Sherman Dallas and other Texas towns. After long surveillance we arrest No 4, No 1, and No 2 flee to London and Mexico before eventual extradition fights yield a partial conviction and a dramatic crossborder pursuit.

Water, Drainage, and Dragging Improve Prairie Roads
A discussion from Wallace's Farmer argues road quality in central Iowa depends on proper drainage. Water under the road causes ruts. tile drainage should intercept seepage above wet spots, with grading and dragging after rain to reduce surface water. Continuous attention to drainage, plus regular dragging, yields better dirt roads for most of the year.
