Jurors in the H E Wootten deportation case face extensive exemptions with 106 of 400 summoned released. Judge Pattee orders bench warrants for employers and adjourns to 10 a m tomorrow as 22 jurors tentatively qualified and 4 more needed for a 24 member panel.
The Superior Court stalled as E A Lythe of Fort Huachuca missed, and Victor Steen was added in his place after Lythe's illness halted panel completion. Judge Pattee and attorneys debated excusing or replacing jurors, with Mannus under impeachment challenge and W. T. Mannus questioned over past remarks. Trial of H E B tem continues with jurors examined, disqualified, and new tests scheduled for tomorrow at 10.
The court advances the jury selection in the State vs H E Wootten Bisbee hardware merchant charged with kidnapping as Henry Richards of Hereford testifies. Jurors 24 tentative chosen with peremptory challenges to follow while impeaching testimony and witness arrivals shape the panel. County Attorney French notes he will return Monday. President Wilson yesterday signed the oil land leasing bill opening vast western lands for development. The Geological Survey estimates more than 6,000,000 acres of lands opened for lease, with coal lands withdrawn totaling about 30,900,000 acres and phosphate and mineral deposits similarly extensive. California and Wyoming lead withdrawn oil and gas lands, while Louisiana and Arizona hold the most valuable deposits among six additional states opening lands to lease.
Feb 4 in Nogales Roy Sorrell cattleman completed a vast sale of 46,000 acres of grazing land on the Baca Float for about a quarter of a million dollars. Globe Construction of San Carlos will begin constructing the bridge on March 1, with work expected to take 150 days.
