Range depletion forces restriction on grazing in west
Spokane Jan The raw depletion for the west due to war demands will necessitate restrictions on future use and a setback in recovery. Harnes assistant US forester told delegates at the Am er stock association convention that despite three years of drought and last season’s fires in the northwest, over 1 000 000 additional cattle and sheep were cared for on forest ranges as a war emergency. Reduction of stock will be via withdrawal of temporary permits and shortening of the grazing season by 15 days in some forests. He urged stock men to improve stock and maintain smaller herds to boost revenue. Progress was made in preparing last year’s cotton fields for the new crop, with leveling and plowing of alfalfa fields proceeding rapidly.
