Phoenix December 71 Secretary of Treasury wires for tearful guidance to directors. Unsold 1918 stamps left in first class agencies will be redeemed from January 1 to 10, 1918 at $4.23 for cash. Agencies bought them at $4.12 to $4.23 with monthly increases and now exchange 1919 series stamps at $4.12. Old stamps redeemed at $4.24, new stamps cost $4.12, balance paid in Thrift Stamps at 25 cents each or cash for fractions.
Ed Duffy of Duffy Brothers was surprised by a burglar in their Williams store about 10 30 p m last night. The burglar fired hitting Duffy in the right lung. He burst through the glass door and died about 20 minutes later as deputies with bloodhounds pursued the fleeing killer.

Grant Warner stepson of Porter McDonald arrived in Tombstone from Washington DC and recounts wartime submarine patrols in June. He joined the navy in 1917 with Hoyt Ash and Laurence Land, trained in San Francisco, then Washington, New York, and London aboard a US submarine. On an experimental June voyage they surfaced and submerged near Brest and the English Channel, finally returning to Washington on January 5 to complete his enlistment for two more years.
Col EC Carnahan, long commandant of the 25th Infantry in Nogales, has been transferred to Douglas to command the Arizona district, relieving Col George H Morgan who will retire from the Army.
