Out of Luck in Telluride and New York Fraud
Jack Martin, returning from Telluride, drew a $2000 draft on Maverick and Warrington of Liverpool from Dan Hamilton who runs the Cornish Arms in New York. The draft was unpaid, Hamilton kept the funds, and Liverpool credit was nil. Martin had Hamilton arrested in New York but the case lacked applicable statutes. Hamilton disappeared with about $6000 total. Martin, a Tombstone figure, urges Cornish travelers in a lengthy Telluride Republican letter to avoid the Cornish Arms as a deadfall and to favor the Star hotel at 43 Hudson Street run by Veal and Stevens.
