A prospector party found a skeleton in an abandoned shaft on Dragoon Mountain. Coroner O. S. Clark and a jury inspected the scene but could not identify the remains. They believe a brutal murder occurred, with evidence of an attempt to sever the body and dirt dumped from the surface. The body is thought to be a Mexican man who may have been there eight to twelve months.
Railroad contractors arrive in Fairbank and Tombstone area as grading teams prepare for an early start on the Fairbank to Tombstone route. Samuel R H Robison of Rotian Tooley firm in Fairbank arranging resupply for camps and animals. Reports say grading may start within 20 days with crews advancing at several locations along the line.
Representatives of the British army are purchasing Arizona horses for service in South Africa. Over two hundred mares were bought east of Prescott and as many more in southern Arizona. About fifteen hundred horses may be brought here if suitable animals are found, then sent to San Francisco quickly. Cavalry in action with the Boers faces a horse shortage, with many units depleted. Three years ago large purchases from Arizona proved sturdier for African service than those from other regions. Dr Wallace and wife returned from a visit to Phoenix. The United States vs The Copper Queen Company timber case remains on the docket in the Supreme Court, expected to be decided this month.
Friday’s Daily reports the death of E A Nichols the county school superintendent. Nichols a long time Willcox resident had suffered prolonged illness and died this afternoon in Willcox. He leaves a daughter and a bereaved family. The notice conveys heartfelt sympathy from the community.
A near miss occurred when a wild train of oil cars careened dangerously near Racson, prompting swift action to avert disaster. No injuries reported and authorities investigated the incident's cause and response.
