There were 59 lines covering 14,866 miles with daily 34,925 miles and annual 12,747,625 miles of service by 283 head clerks 79 clerks and 90 assistants. New lines expanded facilities while the Baltimore and Ohio offer restored daily Cincinnati to Chicago service 310 miles completing a Washington to Chicago through line. The Pennsylvania System provides extensive mail forwarding but limited by poor facilities. improvements promised could justify expanding through routes. Mails between East and West require fifty-five to sixty tons daily from New York to the West and Southwest on trunk lines. three lines including the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central & Hudson River see heavy through traffic.
