Rampant Fire Destroys Steamer Pat Rogers Near Aurora
Aurora, Ind. reports the steamboat Pat Rogers burned on the Ohio River about one mile below Aurora, claiming nearly twenty lives mostly women. The disaster occurred around five, with the hull lit on the shore side and passengers leaping into the water. Capt. Davis and officers acted promptly but the scene included screams, heroism, and tragedy as a child perished and several women were rescued with great peril. The cause is uncertain, with theories of incendiary act or dropped sparks from a pipe. Fire spread to the cabin and hurricane deck, many drifted or jumped, and the vessel, cargo, and papers were lost. Two women reportedly saved after calling for help from the Kentucky shore.
