Iowa State College extension agronomist Joe Stritzel says fall fertilizer choice hinges on application time, soil temperature, and moisture, which influence nitrogen losses via leaching as ammonium converts to nitrate. Research shows late fall applications after mid October offer best protection, since lower soil temps and drier conditions slow ammonium to nitrate conversion. Different nitrogen forms behave differently in soil, with ammonium and ammonium-forming sources less prone to leaching than nitrate. urea converts to ammonium, while nitrates remain water soluble.
Stritzel notes that under slight pressure ammonium dominates two thirds of nitrogen while nitrate is about one third. Some low pressure solutions contain only urea and ammonium. He recommends delaying ammonium nitrogen fertilizer until fall as cooler soils limit ammonium to nitrate conversion, reducing fall nitrogen leaching.
Floyd Arnold of Iowa State College notes father son partnerships yield top dairy herds. The best Iowa herd, owned by Emil and Clarence Zurcher of Farmersburg, produced 15 950 pounds of milk and 564.3 pounds of butterfat per cow last year. The herd evolved from a 4 herds project started in 1930, growing under steady leadership.
For 16 years the herd has stayed above 400 pounds of butterfat per cow on average and topped 500 pounds in five years. The "& Son" label appears among top Iowa herds as some founder names fade and sons take over. A Mapleton farm reported a four year old Holstein cow giving birth to triplet calves, all heifers and healthy.
