Installment credit rules explained and feared relaxations noted
The Federal Reserve issued credit rules curbing excessive installment buying, easing fears of an impossible future. Buyers may still use 18 month terms with down payments of 15 to 20 percent depending on item, and up to $1000 for home improvements with no percentage limit but 18 months payoff. Some expect tighter rules later to conserve materials and curb inflation.
