It Was Rust That Hurt Oats Drop It Was Rust That Hurt Oats

Rust damaged the 1953 oat crop in Kos suth County with stem and crown rusts spreading via spores. Warm moist weather allowed rapid rust growth, overwintering in hosts and windborne spores from the south. Breeders sought resistance but no single variety with full rust immunity exists, so farmers are advised to plant multiple varieties with differing resistances. Also notes a separate line: over 15,000 people died in weekend traffic accidents last year.
