Titonka schools opened Monday with 197 in grades and 106 in high school, total 439. Junior High students form a Safety Patrol to guide first five graders across streets near the school and at two crossings, with designated duty times and officer roles.
Titonka students will be represented at multiple colleges with plans to pursue varied courses. Names include Dorothy Ball Peterzon Patricia, Donovan Abdrewp, Robert Schuitjer, Clarke Miller, Harris Smith, Ruth Welhousen, Dorothy Budlong, Harriet Schram, and others. Several will begin January programs in Cedar Falls Morningside Iowa City Sioux City Rochester Mason City and Britt.
Seven year old LeRoy Santtner, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Santtner of Swea City, was injured Wednesday afternoon in Algona when a brick laden Gail Towne truck driven by John Diem of Algona struck him as he darted into traffic. The boy received stitches for a shoulder wound, a cut on his right hand, and a head bump.
A boy injured at his birthday party near Algona was taken to Kossuth Hospital after running into barbed wire while playing with calves on a farm south of town. Glen Long of Missouri and Mrs. China Long of Algona are mentioned in connection with the family.
District conference at Algona Monday led by Rev. Boardman of Morningside College drew 64 attendees including Rev. W. L. Patterson and Rev. and Mrs. L. G. Gartner of Thonka. Luncheon served at Call Park. The annual conference period nears, and this was the last meeting of the year.
The state traveling library donated a hundred volumes to the public library for a three month display. The list includes works by Ashman Batley Baker Beating, Beresford Brock Bromfield and many other authors with titles spanning adventures, mysteries, and children's books.
Algona area court activity includes Kenneth Hanly Wealey bound over to the Kossuth grand jury on forgery charges with a $1000 bond. Grand jury sessions set for Sept 19. listed jurors from Algona to Whittemore. Other cases include extortion, assault, larceny, embezzlement, reckless driving, and DUI. two defendants released on recommendation. New cases filed this week include foreclosures and account suits. probate actions filed for estates in Green County Wis and others.
Oscar Howard of Ade describes helping after a ditch crash near Titonka as a good Samaritan. Reports say a car ahead went into a ditch and he helped, suffering minor injuries including a black eye and cuts. no one else was hurt in the other vehicle.
Raymond Janvrin, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Janvrin of Algona, died Monday at Kossuth Hospital from a self inflicted gunshot wound in his room after an attempted shooting earlier that morning. Authorities cite possible family troubles and his avoidance of school football as factors. the family previously lived in Bancroft. He was a high school freshman and had two younger sisters.
Mr and Mrs Amos Bonacker and four sons Beryl Marlyn Gerald and Danny returned from a three week visit with Mrs Bonacker s parents in Woodburn Oregon and relatives there They later toured Mt Hood and Mt Rushmore and covered about 2087 miles on the westward trip returning in three days two nights They enjoyed peach orchards sea fishing 15 pound salmon and better fruit prices this season The family also visited Bitter Root Valley friends before returning to Iowa
The community enjoyed a fall style show and entertainment as Leon's fine new street lighting system was installed and began use, drawing many residents for the evening event.
Kossuth county 4-H girls returned from the Iowa State Fair with 31 ribbons. Blue ribbons went to items including knife rack and shoe rack. red ribbons to spice rack and platforms for mop pail. white ribbons awarded for personal expense records and various displays. Esther Scheppman led the demonstration team with Ruth Dreyer and others, while leaders Mrs. Ralph Brown and Ruth Beaton Hicks oversaw activities. The group earned a trip to the state 4-H convention in Ames next June and showcased county exhibits in home efficiency and health contests.
Bancroft defeated Veterans Hospital to clinch the state amateur baseball championship after an 8 run tenth inning. Earlier they beat Chambers Motors and Policyholders of Des Moines, then Keokuk, with strong pitching by Patterson and Callies in relief. The North Kossuth League clubs remark Bancroft’s dominance this season as the others console themselves. Electric fences are easy to move and not costly.
A family reunion of the Mrs. Katherine Downs camillers was held at Call Park in Algona Sunday. Attendees included Mrs. Katherine Downs of Wesley, Homer and spouse with two children from Titonka, Orville Downs with Mareth Ann, and several Cooney and Hildman families from Whittemore Blue Earth Stilson and St Benedict.
Members of the year's citizenship class attended the meeting at the Kosuth county courthouse with sponsors from local service clubs and residents from Titonka Algona and Wesley. Superintendent C B Laing spoke as the class will be discontinued in Rossuth county after organizing under federal auspices in 1938 and aiding 41 non citizens with 16 final papers last year. The second class awaits final papers at the Fort Dodge federal court session while several still await examinations due to data delays and legal timing.
A Wesley gathering of 90 attendees honored Henry Ricke at his home last Sunday. Local relatives from Breda Doon East Dubuque Crystal Lake and Doon attended, with several Ricke family members and guests listed. Henry Ricke, previously bedridden, is now able to be up and about.
A reception for teachers and new patrons of the Titanica Consolidated schools is set for next Monday at 8 PM. The Parent-Teacher Association hosts a program, social hour, and refreshments. Officers for the year include Y G Gartner president Mrs Ray Miller vice president Miss Voight secretary and Mrs J Miller treasurer.
The 1988 Field Day program near Plum Creek outlines new events aimed at growth and spectator interest. Highlights include the Iowa State Junior Championship Midget Trap Shoot for under 18s, a Registered Skeet Shoot, and a two-trap Registered Trap event. An unusual bird exhibit by Ernest Luedtke will feature extinct species. New features also include Grey Hound and Coon Hound Field Trials and a Slingshot Charlie Paylor exhibition from Tennessee.
Hillary Henderson, released from Kansas penitentiary after serving a bank robbery sentence, is to be returned to Kossuth county per an order signed by District Judge G. W. Stillman and county officials. He faces an eight year old information charging bank robbery in the 1930 St Benedict robbery, with a $20,000 bond. Henderson may be implicated in additional robberies at Wealey Whittemore Bode and Hardy and will be brought before the grand jury if he does not plead guilty before the September term.
Hank Path of Ogden described a 10 foot tall Giant Canadian Thistle in his backyard while cleaning weeds. The unusual plant drew myth attention from onlookers and sparked discussion about garden growth.
