Graduates from Nitonka high school prepare for college and nurses training at institutions including Morfingside College Dea Moinea Lutheran Hospital Cedar Falls and State Teachers College. Arthur Boyken goes to Iowa State College. Local guidance urges freshmen to brace for homesickness and adjust to new life while keeping support from home.
Dr R C G Ball has visited 28 farms where horses are afflicted with sleeping sickness. Most animals are very sick and several have recovered. Serum injection treats the disease and vaccination serves as preventive. Early cases were reported weeks ago in Fenton and nearby areas.
In Grundy Center a coincidence drew attention when three Smith brothers occupied all chairs in Reinheck barber shop at once. Grady Smith from Titonka Kirby Smith from Houston Mo and Iva Smith from Kansas City arrived separately but within short intervals to fill the three chairs simultaneously.
Martin Shulz, student pastor who supplied the Lutheran pulpit this summer, preached his final sermon and left for Mapleton Minnesota to visit then proceed to Wartburg Seminary for his last year as school opens September 2. Parishioners commend his service and wish him a profitable year. In unrelated notes, Leistad reports a mare sold for 210 dollars to an eastern buyer after a profitable two seasons, and St John’s Lutheran near Cylinder endures a fourth lightning strike and plans to rebuild on the same site.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Behutter and family with Mr and Mrs John Rippentrop of Thompson left Friday for Madison Wisconsin on a vacation trip.
A boxing match between Tommy Farry and Joe Louis ended in a points decision after fifteen rounds. The Tyke Theatre will screen the first release of the fight footage on September 8, 9, and 10. Local fans can see the event without extra travel and enjoy comfort during the show.
Shipler, a resident near town, has purchased a 240 acre farm in Plum Creek township. Possession will be given March 1, 1938.
Henry Dirksen and Claus J. Tjarks contracted to purchase the Boalts Matate farm of 240 acres in Winnebago county with possession to be given March 1, 1938. Wesley remarks accompany the deal as witnesses to the sale.
The tennis club will hold a bake sale Saturday afternoon and evening at J E Weils Store donations will be appreciated. One tennis court is completed and a back stop is being made for the other court.

The Asches bought two Adolph Missal lots on main street south of the Denton home. A new residence will be erected this fall, as the Asches retire from the farm.
The Buffalo 4-H boys club met at the creamery to set plans for the county fair. County Agent A. L. Brown and Hiden Shaw of Wesley attended as guests. Members will exhibit seven Guernseys four Brown Swiss calves and one colt. Merle Miller chairs with Glen Miller and Richard Ise brand on the decoration committee.
Miss Browne earned a strong local reputation as a teacher who treated each student as a whole person. She extended learning beyond the classroom, nurturing social confidence, emotional security, and individual growth, recognizing that breakfast and home life shape school progress.
The natal church services will be held at the church next Sunday with Calvin Schnucker as pastor.
Preparations are complete for the largest Kossuth County Fair in history opening Monday September 1. Exhibits fill Floral Hall and livestock entries close August 30. The schedule features Winkley’s Saleile Club on the track, harness and running races, baseball games, Team Pulling Contest, and national circuit auto races under MC A sanction. Night show by Gertrude Avary’s Diamond Revue, Happy Harrigan’s animal circus, and Capt. Spillers trained seals headline daily attractions, with Crowley United Shows on the midway and new Octopus ride. Grand concerts by Lotts Creek German Band and Algona band. Events run September 6 to 10 with daily entertainment from dawn to late night.
From New Richmond Minnesota the August Wellner family visited old friends here. August teaches Latin and band at New Richmond High School, now in his seventh year, with state contest recognition and a first place state band award. Mr and Mrs Mark Bacon and daughter Shirley drove to Iowa Falls Saturday night for a family reunion on Sunday. They visited Mr and Mrs Robert Clemang in Mitchell South Dakota Thursday through Saturday and stopped to see Ama Smith in Lakota on the return leg.
A historical notice reports licenses issued to Ralph T. F. Baker and Lorraine F. Richards, both Minneapolis residents, and Kenneth B. Fleming of Garden City, Minn, with Ditte G. Sharp of Mapleton, Minn. The text also mentions a boy with a bow and arrows causing minor disturbances by shooting at two couples in the prior week.
Miss Lucille Cosgrove buys the equipment and business from Mrs Haze Nauman and plans to open a beauty shop at once. Nauman leaves Thursday for Des Moines and then travels to Los Angeles California to establish a permanent home.
Rev W W Izard formerly of Hazelhurst Mississippi finished a Doctorate at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and preached at the Baptist church. He received an unanimous call to become pastor after Rev R M Schwyhart leaves for Navy chaplaincy.
A wedding at the Guy Diamond home near Wesley joined June Sparks to Howard Sparks of Wesley with cousin Evelyn Swanson as bridesmaid. Rev. O M Johnson performed the ceremony as Miriam Larson played and two aunts sang. The couple planned a Minnesota honeymoon before returning to farm work with his brother. The article also notes a Milford traffic stop and Jackie Coogan in town with his band.
Mrs. Jerry Knappey of Britt arrived early in the week to assist Myra. Kk. BE. Nauman was also on hand for several days to help.

Slate v Hainzinger bound over for district court on illegal liquor possession. Probate filings cover the estate of William Greenfield and the will, plus an inheritance tax report for William Higgins.
John Uken contracted to purchase the John Krall Jr. farm in Buffalo township with possession scheduled for March 1, 1938. The deal reflects a rural property transfer and marks a notable local land purchase.
Montana sheriff Casey Loss started for Glasgow last Monday to capture Eugene Walsh formerly of Emmetsburg charged with narcotics violations. Walsh, who escaped during a prior arrest, is linked to a bank robbery by George Hart. Walsh was pursued by Montana officers.
Mr and Mrs Teiko Sietsema and daughter Grace drove Friday to Gull Point Okoboji for the first annual Sietsema reunion. More than one hundred family members attended and planned a second gathering at the same venue later in the year.
Entries are pouring into the county office for the Algona fair with stall spaces in the horse barn and pace barn fully booked. Floral Hall is packed and 75 4-H entries, expected to top 100, will lead the parade led by 4-H club girls. A pot-bellied game between Bahcroft and Lotts Creek is set for Thursday at 2:30, and the Lotts Creek band will play at the grandstand Wednesday.
Algona area Justice Court processed several cases last week. Watter O Lunn Swea City faced a licenseless vending charge and received a $50 fine with $8.45 costs, suspended pending license. Eugene Wolf Bancroft paid $25 fine and $5.75 costs for reckless driving. John Whitney Emmetsburg was jailed 15 days for drunkenness. Edwin M Harvey St Paul pled guilty to speeding with $? fine and $32.50 costs. BR Gardner Cleary Lake fined $5 and $2.05 costs for failing to stop at a stop sign.
The Soil Conservation Committee has on file applications of 1,394 farmers requesting their farms be benefited for the 1927 program.
John K Rippentrop celebrated his 84th birthday Friday with attendance from his children and grandchildren who spent the evening with him and his wife. The event, part of an annual celebration, notes his continued good health and youthful appearance and wishes him continued health and prosperity.
J J Parker of Omaha and his sister Mrs J Schneider were in an accident near St Joseph with a Waterloo driver Mrs Ed Sohn who turned left without warning. All suffered slight cuts and bruises, both cars were wrecked, Parker’s car was brand new.
The Algona Brooklyn Giants swept three games against Forest City Collegians and Texas Black Spiders at the Algona grounds. They won 5 to 4 over Forest City Thursday, battled the Spiders in a high scoring Friday clash, and defeated Forest City Sunday 7 to 6. The Spiders plan a rematch Sunday.
Services in the American language Sunday evening at o clock. Rev Beese of Lakota will conduct the services, Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. Ladies Aid meeting Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Alice, Mrs Allis and Mrs Fisher will serve, Ghost practice Wednesday evening at the usual time. Sept. 12 at 104 m Rev Welken president of the Minnesota District will conduct the services. Sunday School at 8:00 a.m. I wish to thank the people of this community for their kind cooperation which has done much to make this a happy good summer for me.
