Burt painted the Barn at Herman Putz home and helped with chores for Dell Fitch. A new barn is under construction on Mr. Dickmeyer’s rented farm after a lightning strike fire. School opened Monday the 29th. Portland and nearby country youth returned to work after vacations. Walther League Relly at Whittemore drew a large crowd with sermons and supper. Harley A Fitch of Sterling, Tl., returned home for an extended stay with his parents after finishing a two year stenography course. Dan Fitch and to Avery with Fred Garter and Hayley Fitch returned from Sterling Tl, reporting Geo D Stone improving at home while Mrs Stone is ill. Geo Stone Jr sent a telegram noting Mrs Stone’s serious condition but later reports show some improvement. Mrs Dell Fitch plans to visit.

Rural Routes Consolidated Today
Beginning September 1 rural routes 1 and 2 in Iowa are consolidated for eight months with an auxiliary carrier on route 1 four months. Route work shifts place Heifner on both routes April to December and December to April for the auxiliary. Boxes must be relocated and the total route length drops from 62 to 61 miles, saving about 800 dollars annually. Forty rural routes combining went into effect September 1 in Iowa.

Wolf Kills Two Sheep at Budlong Farm

Union Slough Gravel Pit to be Leveled for Bass Hatchery
Supervisor Olaf Puhnemark, who visited the Topte office, says the Union Slough gravel pit will be leveled and prepared for a bass hatchery. All ash has been seined out and only bass will be placed in the hatchery. Punnemark heads the project and will hire help. the Fish and Game department will furnish 100 pair of smallmouth bass. Gravel is being hauled from the west side and other work will follow. Bathing will be prohibited when state takes control.

Farmers Refuse To Cut Weeds In Grundy Center Iowa
Joe and Ralph Bailey two young farmers northeast of Grundy Center were arrested after resisting Sheriff Mamiminga and a township weed commissioner as they tried to cut fifteen acres of weeds.
