Water temperature aids hog gains in winter study

Iowa State College researchers led by Sandy Altman Jr and Gordon Ashton found that hogs watered from atmospheric tanks gained more in cold weather than those with heated water. In a Dec 12 1951 to Jan 23 1952 period pigs with warm water weighed more, but in milder weather atmospheric water performed as well. Researchers urge thermostats set to 45 to 48 degrees to prevent freezing and minimize energy use.

Shipping fever in cattle urged safeguards and vaccination

Dr Herrick warns shipping fever stems from stress and poor handling. Buy direct and move cattle when weather is favorable, with rest breaks and no overcrowding. Vaccination 10 to 12 days before shipment is common, but not a substitute for proper management. Field symptoms include runny nose, coughing, diarrhea, and fever.
