Fire believed sparked by a defective chimney completely destroyed the W C Taylor farm home on the Roy Keen farm area northeast of Algona on Highway 18 just before noon Saturday. The Poindexter family lived there. Algona fire department struggled to fight the blaze with limited water supply.
Mrs Ruth Seaton Hicks will be chief speaker at the Parent Teacher meeting in the high school auditorium next Monday evening October 9. Harold Rakow, son of Will Rakow, tried to miss but his car skidded on the paved highway near Forest City.

The town council adjourned to Thursday evening after a Monday meeting where Interstate Power Co stated they would present a written proposition for a new fifteen year franchise. A verbal proposition had been offered but no formal written proposal yet.

The Town Federation of Women’s Clubs sponsors Citizenship Day to honor those turning 21 in 1939. The event, in Algona at the high school auditorium Sunday evening Oct 8, features Lt Governor Hickenlooper of Cedar Rapids and Mrs Dorothy Houghton of Redoak, with many clergy and school officials invited to bring senior classes.
A judge in England found a simple way to estimate feet per second from speedometer speed. At sixty miles per hour the car covers about ninety feet each second. The method adds half the speed to the full speed to approximate the feet traveled per second, aiding drivers to judge stopping distances and brake condition.
Alice Pannkuks sister Rippentrop, born January 4 1807 in Poreston Ilindis, died September 20 1939 in Buffalo Center after a six day illness. She was married to Calvin Rippentrop in 1890 and had ten children. She joined Reform church in 1917 and transferred to the Congregational church in 1934. Survived by four daughters two sons eighteen grandchildren one great grandchild eight brothers two sisters and many relatives. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church Buffalo Center and burial followed in Buffalo Center cemetery.
A county contest names four Kossuth girls among the group of 25 from Iowa headed to the national 4-H club congress in Chicago in November. Irene Kryuse’s year long record book leads Kossuth’s entries with Elizabeth Ann Inman and Mary Frances Inman also noted for long involvement. Results will be announced by the state 4-H club office at Iowa State College in October.
A five year old boy known as Jim Jimmie suffered toothache. The banker father consulted a dentist who began extraction after a preliminary exam. The dentist pulled the left lower teeth, but the boy later had pain and the mother found the wrong teeth were removed. The dentist claimed Jimmie indicated the correct teeth, while the boy favored pulling the teeth that were not sore.
