Three Generations of Lack Family in Hollowayville Ministry
Three generations of the Lack family serve St. John's Lutheran Church on the Hill Hollowayville. The seventieth anniversary of Rev Ernest J. Lack is celebrated with greetings from neighboring clergy including Rev M P B F Doerman and Rev W C Liefeld. Born in 1869 in Albenrade Denmark, Lack emigrated to America in 1891 and served as pastor in Altena South Dakota Tonka Iowa and Hollowayville for nearly four decades. He taught in war and peace, edited the Lutheran Bulletin for 27 years, and oversaw church growth including a new edifice dedicated in 1924. He married Caroline Jensen in 1888 and fathered six children and eleven grandchildren, with three generations active in ministry and church life.

The Rev Lack served as pastor of First Lutheran Church of Des Moines and as a World War I chaplain, attaining colonel rank.
