A weekly school bulletin covers student and teacher notes across grades. Farewell gifts to Mr Cheever and hopes Ike Coach stays through the year are noted, along with class reports on spelling, drawing, health programs, geography topics, and art projects.
Mrs John Harrenga Sr held an open house on September 24 from 2 to 4 PM for her 80th birthday. Friends and neighbors called or sent cards. gifts included candy or fruit. An evening gathering with her children and grandchildren followed, with sandwiches cake and ice cream served.
Rev W L Patterson receives re appointment to Titonka Doan charge at Estherville for a fifth year. Pastors Fremont Paul G M Squires and others relocate to Mares Charter Oak Willow Terrill and Luverne with assignments across Woden Algona Buffalo Center Burt Crystal Lake Hayfield Wesley Fenton Luverne and Sheldon districts.
Farmer Herman Leerar shot a turkey buzzard near his Woden area Saturday then transported the bird to Britt where officials confirmed it as a rare northern state species. The specimen features glossy black plumage with brown edging and a bright red neck and head, with a wingspan around five feet. it will be mounted and displayed in Britt Public School.
Woden fire units responded at 1 30 am to a fire at the Max Stienfeldt farm north of Woden. Firemen arrived after Buffalo Center crews had earlier been called and the blaze in a down stairs clothes closet was extinguished with minimal damage.
Titonka defeated St. John's Bancroft 5 to 4 in 11 innings to claim the sectional baseball title. Paul Bruns pitched the final, allowing three hits, while Kollasch went 11 innings for Bancroft. Harold Caskey leaves for military service as Titonka advances to district play.
City council advocates pay as you go for sewer and water improvements, addressing outstanding bills from the old administration. The electric light company seeks a franchise to repair lines and build a substation, while some residents favor the city building its own system. A letter from A Peters argues Interstate should not receive another franchise. He supports Councilmen Dr. Sartor and Frank Fisher on service improvements and fair power rates for commercial users. Peters says users could build their own plant or permit another company if it benefits the town.
Holton and companions pleaded guilty to three hotel robberies in Hampton Algona and LeMars. Holton received up to ten years hard labor plus costs. Hansen and Kissinger also faced sentences. Minor-age boys in Burt faced six months for larceny of domestic fowl with parole options. Several cases involved forgery, intoxicated driving, gambling device destruction, and three divorces granted for cruelty and intoxication. A city case against Sjogren was dismissed with costs. jury schedules shifted. new landlord's attachment case filed. probate cases noted.
Helena Senne and Melvin Buss were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday evening in a candlelight ceremony conducted by Rev. Wm. Plant. The wedding featured Louise Kilian, flower girls Joyce Attig and Violet Baade, bridesmaid Lucille Senne, ring bearer Marilyn Senne, and best man Ben Buss. A reception followed at the bride’s home with 75 guests. the couple plans a northern Minnesota trip and will reside with Ernest Sonne.
Dorothy Dirksen of Woden married King Cole son of Mr and Mrs C C Cole of Baton Rouge at St Patrick’s rectory Buffalo Center with Tev B L White officiating. Bride wore gold blue costume with wine accessories and carried roses and baby mums. Attendant Miss Marjorie Dirksen wore a rose corsage. Best man Donald Michaelson. Couple to reside in Kevanes Illinois after October 6. Mr Cole an actor and musician to be engaged in theatrical work.
Anamosa resident Verne Shaker suffered severe burns to his hands and face after gasoline sprayed from a truck carburetor and exploded. The incident highlights workplace fire risk and vehiclemaintenance hazards.
Local draft board reports few volunteers as questionnaires reach 32 200 and Class 1-A men undergo physicals. Only Carel Dellis Levk of Algona will leave October 6. others either not released or transferred. Several men enlist in navy, but releases do not satisfy current calls, complicating state and army coordination. Harold Robert Lichty of Luverne has applied for navy enlistment.
The Immanuel Lutheran church hosted its largest mission festival last Sunday with packed Sunday School program attendance and a record missions offering of 502 dollars. Rev. W iH Hanselmann spoke in German, followed by afternoon address by Rev. d s Holberg and remarks by Dr EH Welke on home and community mission work. Visitors from Wykes and Waltham attended, and meals were served at the church.
The Titanka Woman's Club held its first meeting of the year Thursday evening led by president Mrs. Raymond Krauty. Eighteen members attended after a 7 o'clock supper. Mrs. Beth Miller and Mrs. Mary Budlong led the program. guest Mrs. Cheever joined. The next meeting is planned for Wednesday afternoon, October 5, with Mrs. Torgersen hosting and Mrs. Wolfe guiding the lesson on Home Life in Old Mexico and the Art of Mexico. Mrs. Albert Sleper Sr. of Buffalo Center visited at Tok Slepar's home last week.
