Hog industry seeks compromise hog type for efficiency
R L Pemberton of the Towa Swine Producers Association urged a balance between rangy and chuffy hogs. He favors a hog finishing at 200 to 226 pounds without sacrificing body length, stressing good breeding stock, cross breeding with care, and herd traits like long body, straight underline, and strong ham and loin for economical pork production.

Higher Egg Prices From Grading Cooperation
Iowa farm cooperatives with egg departments could lift farmer returns by buying on grade says Ralph Baker poultry marketing specialist at Iowa State College. He notes a northern Iowa private organization paid 22 cents for top grade eggs while the farm average was about 18 cents. About 26 percent of the eggs it received were top grade. Some cooperatives buying on grade basis have paid farmers on average 1.5 cents per dozen above the farm price in recent years. Iowa farmers handle less than 3 percent of their egg marketing through cooperatives. In 1938 about 10,000 patrons sold eggs through cooperatives. A Town State College 1938 survey of 21 poultry and eggs organizations found 20 reported purchases, with 7 grading on New York specifications and others on current recipient or ungraded. Only three had long term quality improvement programs. Cows on test in Iowa in October produced a record 24.1 pounds of butter fat per animal aided by liberal feeding. Supplies of eggs in the United States for the first half of 1941 are expected to be 3 to 4 percent smaller than in 1940. About 125 dollars has been added to the average Iowa farm value by highway improvements over 20 years per agricultural economists at Iowa State College. Professional bacon fryers start by using a cold skillet turning bacon, pouring off fat as it accumulates.
