Advice on Caring for Many House Plants in Winter

L Grove of Iowa State College Extension explains that common garden soil lacks nutrients for potted house plants and should be amended with sand leaf mold or peat. A typical mix is one part soil to two or three parts amendments, with variations by plant type such as African violets begonias ferns needing more leaf mold or peat and cacti thriving on equal parts sand and soil. Fertilization recommended at four tablespoons bone meal or superphosphate per peck of soil, no extra fertilizer for 3 to 4 months, then light feeding as days lengthen. avoid overfeeding in short days to prevent soft growth. Sudden exposure to sun can burn plants. gradually acclimate sun lovers to light after shade care.
