Fall plowing boosts spring vegetable yields and erosion control
Heavier soils allow two extra spring weeks with fall plowing enabling early planting of cool season crops like potatoes and carrots. Contour plowing on slopes preserves moisture, reduces erosion, and exposes pests to the elements. Rotate plots, move gardens after five years, and choose sites away from windbreaks yet protected from prevailing winds. Plan for small fruits and lay out fruit plantings after fall plowing.
