Old Age Assistance Board Meets in County Session
The county old age assistance board met last Monday with S. V. Carter of Swea City as chairman, Mrs. A. H. Holmes of Algona as secretary, and O. Fred Zwiefel as county overseer. Through November 1, 1934, 63 pensions were allowed locally, with 14 more by Oct 31 this year and 24 more under investigation. About 69 applications have passed since the law took effect. Burial expenses may be covered and Des Moines set aside a $54,000 fund for this. The law taxed $1 per person in year one and $2 in year two. the $1 tax yielded about a million dollars, the $2 tax about two million, plus a million from the legislature, totaling three million for year two. Each county shares by population. Why, with $2 million more, were only 27 additional pensions allowed the second year? Final pension approval rests with the state board in Des Moines.
