Moisture Discounts Up Sharply On Grain
Iowa farmers face higher moisture discounts on corn this fall as elevators raise rates due to drying costs and fuel prices. ISU economist Bob Wisner notes discounts reflect drying and shrinkage, with several methods in use including a 2 percent per moisture point over 15.5 and a flat 4 cent per point option. Farmers should calculate drying costs and shrinkage to judge potential returns before sale.

Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell says corn and soybean prices will stay strong in the coming months as farmers delay sales. He notes prices depend on crop size, foreign demand, and 1974 planting plans, with many farmers storing crops to gain higher prices or shift income into 1974.
