Protein Ration Will Save Corn for Hog Growers
Iowa State College extension specialist B L Quaife notes that a balanced protein ration dramatically reduces corn needs in pig production. A 260 pound pig can be fed with 16 bushels of corn, 6 bushels of oats and 70 to 99 pounds of protein, with alfalfa pasture ready to supply protein after 50 to 60 pounds. He urges producers to secure protein supplies, using alfalfa pasture or soybeans, including whale soybeans, to supplement pregnant sows and fattening hogs as needed.
