Cattle Slaughter, Feeders Up in 1956 Says Farm Economist
Iowa State College farm economist Kutish notes cattle slaughter runs ahead of 1955 with a 23 percent rise in steer kills and a 4 percent rise in heifers in the first quarter of 1956. Cow kills fell 8 percent while on feed totals grew slightly. He cites more older steers in feed, tighter supplies of good and prime steers, and a narrower price spread between good and prime. Feeder shipments to the Corn Belt were down 6 percent, with heavier cattle movement rising but still half of last year’s rate. Marketings in coming months expected to be smaller than the previous spring and summer.
