In France Empey describes recruits spotting a cootie hunt in the front line trench. He avoids older men with disgust and endures itchy nights in a shirt battle. A major writes a letter to Miss Alice Somebody in London between shell bursts and cootie checks.
The account describes identity disks worn by soldiers with rank name religion and a mix of paranoia and practicality. It recounts a Sunday church parade where a German fighter plane circled, the chaplain kept a book, and troops formed a semicircle while the airplane loomed overhead.
A soldier recalls marching up the Hue with the brigade and meeting shell fire for the first time. He describes the trenches at Whisky Street and No Man's Land, the fear and cold, the rats in shellproof cellars, and the longing to return home to Jersey City.
