U S Farmers Rebel Against Lord Scully
A Chicago writer portrays Lord William Scully as a feudal lord who owns extensive Illinois land. Seventy tenants in Grundy and Livingston counties resist rent hikes from 6 to 10 dollars per acre, citing taxes on their improvements and long efforts to build farms. The piece notes Scully’s distant castle and his disappointment in finding American farmers assertive and independent rather than compliant.
