Time Now to Think of Your Fall Pig Crop
County Extension Director A. L. Brown urges breeders to farrow pigs in August and September to ensure later fall pigs gain enough before winter. Pigs weighing around 60 pounds by December with good feed and quarters will fare well through winter, aligning with a projected record hog population this fall and winter. Breeding now helps fit pigs into the overall hog production plan and avoids housing and care bottlenecks from late spring herds.

Uniform Marketing of Poultry Is Profitable
Poultry marketing expert A. D. Oderkirk of Iowa State College urges a uniform marketing plan this year. He recommends selling more birds in summer to ease processing plant burdens and crowding in poultry houses, replacing seasonal cullings with ongoing thinning of thriftless birds. Frequent sales when young birds are in good condition conserve feed and labor, with prices expected to stay steadier under price controls and high demand.
