Popular mother dies in Algona after illness and long care
Alice Cosgrove, wife of George Holtzbauer, died at Algona May 1988 aged 52 after a winter of poor health. Born June 27 1879 near Titonka, she taught rural schools, worked as a clerk, and raised two children. Survived by husband, Lorraine Tierney, two grandchildren Craig and Marilyn Tierney, sister and brother, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral at St Cecelia’s in Algona with burial in Wesley.

They drove about 1800 miles and reported 86 to 90 degree shade temperatures, noting Rockaway Beach as a winter playground. Algona Awarded Grading Contract to McGuire Bros
Algona’s county board awarded the 1048 grading contract for 2 miles of local roads to McGuire Bros of St. Joe. The project covers about 24,000 cubic yards of earth excavation with a total grading contract of 9,916.50 dollars. All bids for supplying 120,000 gallons of gasoline for the coming season were rejected, and a new bidding date will be set later. A graveling contract is expected to be let in May on an undetermined date.

Rochester man charged with passing stopped school bus
A. L. Kennedy of Rochester appeared before Mayor Hamstréet on a charge of passing a school bus while it was stopped to let children on and off. He posted cash bond to appear again on May 12. Bus No. 2, driven by Conrad Schmidt, was involved. It is unlawful to pass a stopped bus, akin to streetcar rules.

District court actions include Algona area drivers fined for drunken driving with bonds. Hans Rustad paid 25 dollars after a collision near Buffalo Center. Reuben Krueger admitted guilt to theft of domestic fowl, facing up to a year in jail. Ernest Haack pleaded guilty and was jailed until fines paid. A 30 day jail term was given for petty larceny in Bancroft. A transient, John Conners, was fined and jailed for assault. Roy Crapser reported Conners peeping.
