Des Moines dispatch notes Marshalltown council challenges the soldiers' preference statute in court. Old soldiers appeal to the supreme court while state and local officials discuss funding, rail projects, and legal actions.
A scattered Oskaloosa dispatch reports verdicts and criminal cases including Douggist Charles Moore guilty for selling deer contrary to law and EB D Aylesworth sentenced to two years for stealing losses. It notes murders, arsons, a fatal railroad accident, a bank of crimes in Osceola and Des Moines area, plus a pending trial for Dr J W Crofford in Osceola.
A flurry of Iowa items includes John French arrested near Cedar Hapida identified as Voliceman Claude Brieo’s killer, farmer William Ashman dies after a horse kick, and a child burns from matches with family tragedy nearby. A Rock Island line train derailed near Homestead at dawn, plunging into a thirty foot embankment. The wreck injured several passengers including A G C Hotchkiss and William Smith, while the engine and cars suffered heavy damage. Railway detectives and sheriffs pursued robbers believed to have caused the incident as engineers and crew escaped with minor to serious injuries.
George W. Bowder of Waterloo abandons breach of promise case after Madame Eugenie De Tafayade, famed French pianist, marries in Chicago. Bowder had claimed 35000 plus expenses from Mia Curtiss and Hariman, with dismissal following news of Bowder’s upcoming marriage to De Lafayette in Chicago.
A fire at the H. H. Kneebone home in Sioux City early yesterday after gasoline spilled in the kitchen ignited. Mrs. Newton and her son John were guests, trapped on an upper floor as flames consumed the dwelling. the mother and son died from smoke and gas exposure.
